The Indian sedan market delivered a surprisingly strong performance in July 2026, even as SUVs continue to dominate the country’s passenger vehicle market. A total of 37,728 sedans were sold during the month, marking a healthy 14% year-on-year growth over July 2025. Sales also increased by nearly 21% compared with June 2026.
However, the numbers reveal an interesting story. The sedan market is being driven overwhelmingly by affordable compact models, with the Maruti Suzuki Dzire continuing to dominate the segment by a huge margin. The Dzire, Hyundai Aura and Honda Amaze together accounted for nearly 88% of all sedan sales in July.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire Remains Untouchable
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire once again finished comfortably at the top of India’s sedan sales chart. Maruti dispatched 23,791 units in July 2026, compared with 20,895 units during the same month last year.
That represents 13.9% YoY growth and gives the Dzire an extraordinary 63.1% share of the sedan market. In fact, the Dzire alone sold more units than all the other sedans combined.
Its combination of affordability, fuel efficiency, spaciousness, practicality and strong presence among both private and fleet buyers continues to make it the undisputed king of India’s sedan segment.
Hyundai Aura Holds Second Position
The Hyundai Aura secured second place with 5,817 units in July 2026. Its sales increased by an impressive 25.5% YoY, compared with 4,636 units in July 2025.
The Aura commanded approximately 15.4% of the sedan market, making it Hyundai’s strongest-selling sedan by a considerable margin.
Its compact dimensions, comfortable cabin, attractive design and efficient powertrain continue to make it a popular choice among urban buyers and fleet operators.
Honda Amaze Records Massive 71% Growth
The biggest growth story among the leading sedans came from the Honda Amaze. Honda sold 3,436 units in July, compared with 2,009 units during July 2025.
That represents a remarkable 71% year-on-year increase, making the Amaze the fastest-growing high-volume sedan in the segment.
The Amaze’s combination of premium styling, spacious interiors, strong boot space and Honda’s reputation for reliability continues to attract buyers looking for a practical family sedan.
Volkswagen Virtus Leads The Midsize Sedan Class
The Volkswagen Virtus was India’s best-selling midsize sedan in July 2026, recording 1,420 units.
Although its monthly sales increased by 18.8% compared with June, its year-on-year performance remained challenging, with sales falling 21% from 1,797 units in July 2025.
Despite the decline, the Virtus remains popular among enthusiasts who appreciate its European styling, spacious cabin and strong driving dynamics.
Skoda Slavia Follows Virtus
The Skoda Slavia finished fifth overall with 993 units sold in July. Its sales declined by approximately 15% YoY from 1,168 units recorded in July 2025.
The Slavia continues to offer a combination of elegant design, powerful petrol engines and a premium driving experience, but like other midsize sedans, it faces growing pressure from similarly priced SUVs.
Honda City Struggles Against SUV Competition
The iconic Honda City recorded 571 units in July 2026, down 11.6% YoY from 646 units in July 2025.
The result highlights the continuing challenge faced by traditional midsize sedans as Indian buyers increasingly move toward SUVs offering higher seating positions and more imposing road presence.
Toyota Camry Finds Growth At The Premium End
At the premium end of the list, the Toyota Camry sold 205 units in July 2026. While the absolute number remains small, the Camry posted an impressive 27.3% YoY growth, compared with 161 units in July 2025.
The Camry therefore stands out as one of the few premium sedans showing positive momentum despite the broader shift toward SUVs.
Compact Sedans Continue To Rule India
July’s sales figures make one thing very clear: India’s sedan market is increasingly concentrated around affordable compact models.
The Dzire, Aura and Amaze together sold 33,044 units, accounting for nearly 88% of total sedan sales. Meanwhile, midsize sedans such as the Virtus, Slavia, Verna and City continue to face pressure from SUVs occupying similar price ranges.
The overall sedan market nevertheless grew by 14% YoY, showing that there is still meaningful demand for cars that offer good fuel economy, comfortable cabins, large boots and relatively affordable ownership costs.
Conclusion
The July 2026 sedan sales report once again confirms the dominance of the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which remains far ahead of every other sedan in India. The Hyundai Aura and Honda Amaze complete a powerful top three, while the Amaze deserves special attention for its remarkable 71% annual growth.
At the same time, midsize sedans such as the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia and Honda City continue to fight against the country’s growing SUV obsession. Interestingly, the Toyota Camry has managed to grow at the premium end of the market.
With 37,728 units sold, July was a strong month for sedans, but the sales distribution shows that affordability and practicality remain the biggest factors keeping this traditional body style alive in India.
